Miasa Elementary and Junior High is located in a mountain village to the east of Hakuba where the next Winter Olympic Games will be held in 1998.
The school has been a combined elementary and junior high school since its start 20 years ago, and is small in size with only 130 children.
The school is erected at a planed mountaintop 952 meters above sea level. Miasa itself is one of the coldest villages in Shinshu, an area well known for its long cold winter. The school, with its altitude, experiences severest winters in the village.
