As the rationization measures, including close down of mines, were taken, the population in Hokkaido kept on falling down. To cope with it, two junior highs are merged in 1982 to have one junior high for one city.
Students are gentle and flexible in carrying out team activities. A ninety five percent of them are active members of club activities. They perform outstandingly in long distance relay races and ski meet. The student council leads the volunteer activities and the all Utashinai Junior chorus. Twenty personal computers were first installed in 1991. Now, they are used in a variety of areas, such as, in classes and in club activities.
