The "Research on Network" had adopted as one of the study subjects for the 3rd-grade students of the Electronic Course to accelerate participation to the society by students through use of the network. The reasons for putting the trial into practice are,
- basic network configuration and protocol can be leant in a classroom,
- the network is no more for special people,
- merits of and cautions to be paid to the network cannot be understood until one actually uses it,
- experience may be a motivation for active participation to practice courses,
- good influence may be expected to students' study attitude, and
- voluntary activity may be created when stage is upgraded from "learn how to use it" to "utilize it for a purpose."
We experienced the electronic mail exchange using the PC communications system sponsored by the Prefectural Education Center, until connection to the Internet was complete. Through the PC communications, we learnt how to write and respond electronic mails and contents to be contained in the mails from teachers of other schools. When the Internet was introduced, students were deeply impressed to the fact that color images could be exchanged unlike the PC communication. Students proposed us to create a school home page, and the first edition was somehow completed at the end of June. The procedure was introduced by the NHK and a local news paper, which affected students in good way, making them to have self-confidence on what they were challenging. At the School Festival held in November, we has temporary interchange with 4 senior high schools and colleges outside the prefecture, using CU-SeeMe. Although we wanted to deepen the interchange taking the opportunity, it was regrettable that no practical methods were discovered and the interchange was not continued. At the theme study conference, the personal computer connected to the Internet was connected to a large-sized projector and explanation was given using the Plauza. The presentation method was new and effective.
Results obtained:
- The fact that the network world is wide is learnt through experience and we have come to feel that the information is changing dynamically and the world is living.
- The electronic mail has gained a position as an essential tool of the daily life and students gained the habit to think about needs of and accurately express what are needed to the partners.
- Through joint creative activities, students realized importance on utilizing information each other, resulting in improved cooperativeness, and felt that the mail is effective for efficient use of the time.
- Each student is capable of creating own link files, permitting calling the necessary information at the necessary time.
- Students are capable of conducting effective presentation using the HTML.
- The activity contributed to earn higher reputation of not only students, but also the school, since it was adopted by the media.
- Change from teacher leaded lessen towards student leaded classroom results in pleasant lessens, improving the trends where students positively try to solve problems by themselves.
Review:
- The number of clients is insufficient, restricting the time for free use by students.
- More electronic mail exchange and interchange using CU-SeeMe should be conducted. For CU-SeeMe, a coordinator is needed who acts as the leader for all member students.
- The line is too fine, resulting in longer time for accessing from multiple clients.
- As it is likely that students are just observing the monitor during a lessen, the objective of using the Internet should be clarified to students.
- The schedule should be managed effectively since time quickly flies unexpectedly when one is observing the monitor.
- Team teaching is necessary for achieving efficient lessens and contents of lessens without operating machines must be clarified.
In order to evaluate plans for the next fiscal year, a questionnaire on teachers' consciousness to Internet was carried out in February this year. According to the summary of the questionnaire, about 70% teachers feel necessity and 30% of them has already used the Internet in some ways. Many opinions request arrangement of the environment and guidance on how to use the system. Many teachers feel it a good way to encourage circle activities being lead by students themselves. It is also understood that many teachers wish participation to external plans and more active activities. We wish to positively supports them through provision of plans and active use of the Internet through study classrooms.

1. Introduction
The objective of the study lies in to learn about "correlation of Internet to education" to know about "what can be done by education" and to fine "the direction of fulfillment and development of school education in a senior high school." The study theme adopted was how the necessity of information education should be reflected to lessens. It is considered that the theme study lessen should be the main method rather than the conventional knowledge-oriented and skill-oriented education and teaching how to summarize contents of knowledge, in order to draw out the features of the information education. The theme study lessen is effective for improving voluntary study activities by students and the ability on presentation of study results. In the theme study, not only acquisition and processing of the information, but also subjective activities are required as the transmitter of the information. Since versatile information are involved, the information sending skill should also be mastered so that the information will be received correctly and accurately. In this research, what should be learnt as a information transmitter are studied by practice by acting as a receiver of the information.
For execution of the research, the "Research on development of information education curriculum at the senior high school stage and continuation to the university education" (March '95, representative researcher, Yasuo Nishinosono, Professor of Naruto Educational College) was referred to.
2. Main lessens at Inernet practice classrooms
- 1st grade: Information engineering, English (oral communications). HR
- 2nd grade: Geographic A, overall mathematics, information engineering, English (writing), HR
- 3rd grade: Information engineering à chemistry), HR
- Other: International high school environment summit
3. Result (main results are reported in http://www.daimon-hs.daimon.toyama.jp)
- 1st grade
[Information engineering (chemistry field)]
All students were capable to conducting the research and converting the report into the HTML form.
1) To create a database that senior high school students can use on a chemistry subject. Further, the ability for evaluating the created product using the Hyper Text is upbrought.
2) Number of theme: 180 reports on 35 theme are recorded in the HTML.
[English (oral communications)]
Mails are exchanged with many overseas students on the certain theme and a presentation is carried out, summarizing the information gathered on the theme.
- 2nd grade
[Information course] [Information chemical] [Overall mathematics]
The acid-base is studied on the chemical and the programming and data analysis procedures, on the mathematics. Results are reported on the home page (about 50 pages).
In the information education, good results cannot be expected by the "teach and learn" type of attitude. Therefore, how to proceed the theme study is discussed in a classroom and individual theme study of each student was given as a home work to be done after school or summer or winter vacation. Thus, the computer room, laboratory and the test equipment were effectively used.
It was confirmed that advice by an external lecturer improves student's consciousness as can be seen in the example of the mathematics.
The information education was flexibly executed in the cross curriculum way with the "open education, TT and external advice" being the basic concept and aiming at new addition of theme study, without making progress difference with that for students of the engineering course.
- 3rd grade
[Information course] [Information chemical]
1) Practice on information gathering and transmission using E-Mail and NetNews services
2) Practice of using the library index by accessing the OPAC (online library index) using TelNet
3) Constructive expression and modeling of information using a theme of organic compound
Presentation and debate could be performed on the above.
4. Closing
The "open education", "TT" and "external advice" exist as the coordinate axes under the network environment. These factors were needed naturally during the course of introducing the Internet and theme study. Further, 1) combined use of roundup lessens and theme study, and 2) opening of lessen results and created products to the public are considered as the future plans. For this purpose, review and execution of "evaluation" for students from the versatile points of view is necessary. There, it is naturally required to transit from measurement of knowledge transfer to evaluation of versatile intelligent expression.
As the information environment of the school, information exchange is needed in each stage of local, community and global. At present, they are under construction.
By use of the Internet, transfer of idea against the education is required while trying to bury the information education to the varieties of study subjects.

1. Students changing their looks
Students enter the senior high school with tired looks. They are enforced competition ever since higher degrees of the elementary school. Words towards "me" decease and they become nervous on the positional correlation with friends. Those girls are changing their looks while they come into contact with the Internet.
2. Past Activities
Firm stay in New Zealand, acceptance of football teams from New Zealand and Australia, friendship matches, etc. were held in the past, however, all of them were operated in the teacher leaded way. For most students, a foreign country is a far away country and "internalization" was merely a word. The Internet realizes an environment where, once a student sit down in front of a terminal, beyond the monitor is a foreign country, bringing "foreign countries within the daily life."
3. Features of Lessens Using Internet
Example: English and Commercial Courses [International understanding]
- Learn how to write in English on a given theme (Concentration is high since the purpose is clear).
- Input of sentences (Operational activity. Average student can enter 300 characters per 10 minutes.)
- Insertion of own opinion (Objection, agreement, reasons and insistence)
- Sending mail/information (To schools in U.S.A., Finland, etc.)
- Response from partners returned by about a day (Evaluation of the product)
4. Internet Functions and Change of Students
(1) Electronic mail
Interchanging countries: Finland, U.S.A. (New York, Ankanso), China, Australia
Example: Mail from China
I don't like Japanese. May be Japanese are not isn't so bad as I thought, but I can't forget the war between our two countries. It difficult for me to accept Japanese. If my answer is not right, then I'm sorry!
(2) WWW
- Pages by students themselves;Self introduction and presentation on circle activities
- Search during lessen;
Search of exchange rate, survey of number of exported cars, etc. at trade simulation class
(3) Use of CU-SeeMe
- Periodic mail exchange with a technical high school in LA, U.S.A. (every Thursday) for 30 minutes from 8:00a.m., aiming at voluntary operation by students. Language education and free discussion on school cultural festival
- Students' impression (Cu-SeeMe with a school in LA)
What I was most impressed was that I received a friendly response of "Hi!" against the first words I sent. I felt quite wonderful that I could actually talk with a girl living in a far away country beyond the sea. Words are understood or not merely by how they are pronounced. The most important thing is to have a chance of making many friends. Of course, I sent E-Mail after Cu-SeeMe.
(4) Various projects
Example: Mailing list with Aich Educational College
Self-introduction using Cu-SeeMe--Essay on school life (about 600 characters)--execution of questionnaire (what are required for a good teacher?)
(5) Change of students' consciousness
"Secrets are proof of a person"--the promise that others will never seek electronic mails is strictly observed as it is said that there are personalities that is upbrought by guaranteeing secrets. This improves reliable relationships and make students feel free to write English and Japanese mails.
(6) What are proved through practice
While the bi-directional communications are the important feature, close linkage between teachers in charge is essential for ensuring this feature. Check of students not receiving responses is regularly carried out. We feel that to observe the natural fact that mails are private communications contributes in improving students' consciousness. The Internet which makes students possible to go over the classroom wall and break the school fence makes us feel of an era, "the information makes looks." Our slogan of "make personality importance", we feel, is realizing, not merely a word.
The network also realizes a place for interchanging among teachers of different types of schools (private, public, 2-year college and university), providing new points of view and energy to teachers.
